PROJECT 1: INDUSTRIALISED BUILDING SYSTEM

This project is a group assignment which predominantly relates to the topics of Industrialized Building System (IBS) as well as the materials’ embodied energy. Firstly, in a group of 7, we need to perform a study on a building preferably an apartment which was constructed fully or partially using IBS method and identify all the IBS components used. We are required to design an apartment units which size not exceed 100 square meters. The design should incorporate mainly IBS components with appropriates sizes. We need to submit a model of the apartment on an A2-size board and a 3-5 minutes video presentation of the model making process as well as the embodied energy calculation in appropriate format.

Reflection:

Through this project, firstly I had understand different types of IBS construction method. I was able to apply appropriate IBS construction method in the production of a model for an apartment building. Besides, I was able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of IBS construction process through model making. Next, I had learnt about construction system concerning energy efficiency and ecological impact as well as the embodied energy calculation. Lastly, I had learnt the importance of group work as we divide task among ourselves and share information to each other. A good team work leads to a good outcome.

PROJECT 2: CONSTRUCTION SOLUTIONS

This project relates to our studio 5 design project, which consist of two parts. For task 1, we are required to conduct some precedent studies of recent, complex or unique construction systems that would be applied in the studio design. These including the roof system, two façade system, and the structural system including the floor system. We need to conduct a thoroughly study on all the system based on the questions, and produce two alternative of façade design schemes for studio design project. For task 2, we are required to develop practical construction solutions and detailing through sectional perspective drawings of spaces. We need to produce detail sectional perspective drawings of two interesting spaces. After that, we need to include all the task required into A3 bound report.

Reflection:

Through this project, I had learnt to analyze and document construction methods and materials. I had learnt how to choose materials used based on my studio design required. I start to consider the construction aspects throughout the design process. Besides, I had learnt to take building materials and construction details as part of my design elements. I had exposed myself to a more extensive study of building construction by investigating the latest and more advanced technology and practice of the industry: from site analysis to all the advanced construction system, energy efficiency , waste management, embodied energy as well as the latest construction methods. Last but not least, this project had allowed me to understand more on the construction system and new technology that used in site nowadays.
