ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO 5
[ARC60306/ARC3117/ARC3118]
PROJECT 1 : PRELIMINARY STUDIES
The preliminary studies is a preparatory assignment that focus on investigating basic notion of the city, and the learning from examples of community library around the world. It consists of three components which are site documentation, site analysis and precedent studies of urban infill and community library. For this project, in a tutorial group, we need to observe and record the site's current condition. Our site is located at Lot 153, Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah/ Jalan Ipoh. Each group is required to study and analyze one example of an urban infill that is a community library. Next, we are required to submit minimum 8 A3 panels of site analysis, and minimum 4 A3 panel of precedent studies.

Reflection:
Through this project, firstly I was able to determine and describe the role of community library in a contemporary urban setting. Through conducting case studies and site analysis, I was able to generate an understanding of physical and cultural context and development of urban environments. Next, I was able to examine and establish appropriate architectural responses and strategies for designing within an urban infill site. besides, I learnt how to produce necessary documentation to record and communicate site analysis findings, and for further use in the coming design stage. Lastly, a high cooperation from each group members can lead to a high efficiency and good outcome. Overall, our group had the best team work and this is a very fun working experience.
PROJECT 2: COMMUNITY LIBRARY
For this project, we are required to design a community library within an urban infill site which consists of appropriate architectural responses that address the aspects of the urban street context and user behavioral patterns as discerned and analyzed in the Project 1, Preliminary Studies. Apart from response to the character of the street, the design should take into consideration a holistic application of structural, spatial, functional and environmental requirements to address the user needs for a community library. Besides, the design development of this project will include an introduction to the legislative restrictions that impact an architectural scheme, the integration of lighting and acoustic design, as well as the design exploration and detailing of the façade and building envelopes that is coherent with the architectural language of the overall design project.
INTERIM 1
For interim 1, we are required to produce not exceed 1 A0 on the following requirement:
1. Diagram/ sketched for concept
2. Ground floor plans with site context
3. Upper floor plans indicate spaces
4. Sections showing interesting spaces
5. Massing model

INTERIM 2
For interim 2, we need to produce 4 to 6 A1 panels on the following requirements:
1. Floor plans 1:100
2. Elevations 1:100
3. Section 1:100
4. Site plan 1:500
5. Diagram and design development strategies
6. Study models
FINAL PRESENTATION
For final presentation, we are required to produce 6 to 10 A1 panels fulfill the following requirements:
1. Floor plans 1:100
2. Section 1:100
3. Site plan 1:500
4. Final model 1:100
5. Diagram for demonstration of structural, lighting, facade and acoustic integration.
6. Diagram, renderings and design development strategies and responses.

Reflection:
Through this project, I was able to produce a design outcome for a community library that is site-specific through its formal, cultural, legislative, structural and environmental design responses. I was able to apply basic knowledge of urban architectural typologies, infill design strategies, and community library programming. Next, I learnt how to design within the constraints of feasibility and in response to basic design codes and statutory requirements. For my community library, I had create a titled green wall structure in Sentul Science Library within the site constraints, create an interesting urban infill building and bring fun element into the site. Besides, I learnt how to utilise study models, diagramming, orthographic plan-section and elevation studies to explore and resolve relevant spatial, structural, functional and environmental issues in the design development phase. My tutor, Mr. Anand had teaches and guide me on how to design from the early design development stage until the end of the semester. The knowledge teaches by him will definitely helpful in my future. Last but not least, I was able to produce both 2D and 3D drawings, models and presentations to verbally and visually communicate my architectural ideas and scheme.
