ASIAN ARCHITECTURE

(ARC2234/ARC60403)

PROJECT: CONTEXTUAL ARCHITECTURE STUDY AND CASE STUDY PAPER

For this project, we are required to identify a building in Asia and investigate through observation and readings on contemporary contextual practices and issues in Asia. Based on the selected building, we need to conduct literature review on its vernacular architecture references such as climate, construction, structure, layout, and etc. We are required to identify the contextual Architecture elements of selected building and produce in one A2 board. I had chosen Deck House, Janda Baik as my case study building. Deck House showing strong elements of Malay vernacular architecture, and one of the most interesting part of Deck House is the use of Malay house open layout plan as design approach. Built in the rainforest, contemporary Deck House achieve thermal comfort by applying Malay vernacular architecture elements into its design.

Reflection:

Through this project, firstly I had understand what is the meaning of vernacular architecture and what are the elements of Malay vernacular architecture in Malaysia. Malay vernacular architecture build with the consideration of site context, climate, and local culture. Besides, I learnt how to conduct case study through observation and investigation on the selected building which is Deck House. Next, through this project, I had learnt what are the passive design strategies used in Malay Vernacular Architecture to achieve thermal comfort in tropical climate. Deck House has apply these strategies and design element of Malay Vernacular house into its design. I was able to explain Malay vernacular architecture elements in vernacular house.

Part 2: Case Study Paper

For this part, we are required to use the same building to identify the specific topic and define specific scope of study. We are required to generate a good research title that reflects the research intention. We also need to create a concept mapping and proposed research title and research questions, to give an overview of the proposed case study paper. For Deck House, it uses Malay vernacular house open layout plan as design approach to achieve thermal comfort. Thus, my research title are: Solutions to Heat Gain Challenges using Open Layout Plan in Deck House.

Case Study Paper:

Through this project, firstly I had learnt what are the Malay Vernacular Architecture elements that used by Deck House to achieve thermal comfort. I understand how open layout plan help in reduce heat gain into interior. I had learnt how to analyze these Malay Vernacular elements that can be found in Deck House through simple diagramming. Besides from using Malay open layout plan in design, Deck House also uses other elements such as openings, materials and Malay house design. Built in the middle of rainforest, Deck House has large overhangs and elevated just like Malay Vernacular House. The windows, louvers and doors are open to allow well ventilation to occur throughout the day. I understand the importance of the apply vernacular architecture elements into contemporary design when we want to achieve thermal comfort in our hot and humid climate. Last but not least, thanks to all the lecturers especially my tutor Puan Yati in guiding me throughout the semester.
