Design Statement

Kampung Tradisi in Kampung Kerinchi experiencing fading of kampung activities and values due to imbalance urban growth. The existing community are struggled and challenged against their culture and lifestyle, threatened that their land will be taken away.  Less development, opportunity, and lack of gathering spot around that area causing decline of social interaction and activities. People started to leave to new place and left the elderly there. The existing community cultivate vegetation, fruits & herbs, just like other typical Malay kampong. The intention of maintaining "Kampongness" create a sustainable transformation where the community are able to adapt to change while preserving the value of essence of place. Integrated approach towards sustainable urban development with a view on village heritage is crucial and valuable. Design focus on maintain their village heritage value, sustainable livelihood, sense of place, and how kampong value should be preserved, to sustain the future generations.  Public spaces play a vital role in providing opportunity for people of all ages groups and background to socialize with one another. Thus, there is a need to break down the community into smaller density, and provide a common public space that gather all the people. Ground floor and first floor are the commercial area where replace the existing stalls and shop along the site, podium floor is a place where residents and neighbourhood people meet. Urban farming allow people to play and interact. Going up facilities floor are dedicated for the residents only with program spaces. The community garden act as an interconnected space and common area for the residents to hang out and carry activities, promoting active garden and healthy lifestyle. Community garden is the core of the design to form the sense of community. It placed between every two floors for the residents to walk around the garden area, encouraging residents to interact, share knowledge, and create strong community bonding.  The building form are break into two block to allow more natural ventilation and daylight into the building creating a more spacious environment. The varieties of housing units are proposed to fulfill the needs of millennial, and directly promote a modern dwellings development.
