Design Statement
Wood carving is a traditional Dungun craft industry which can be traced from the traditional fishing boats, traditional houses and furniture. Even though wood carving is an important industry, but young generations feel disconnected from the wood carving. There are lack of effort from youngsters to preserve and promote their own culture heritage. Wood carving culture is not celebrated through specific exhibition and workshop spaces, resulted as Dungun started to loss the essence of place and appear to be lack of memory attachments. There are many timber construction spots in Dungun which is disconnected from each other. Thus, there is a need to propose a wood carving centre at Dungun that act as a platform for local community and tourist (local and international) to appreciate the wood carving industry through integrated exhibition and workshops spaces for more “experiential learning”. The intention of wood carving learning centre is to revive something that glory before. By involving and experience the wood carving process, users expose themselves to the fundamental wood carving motif and types of timber. It act as an information exchange-gather place for the wood carver from local and international.
